Porto
Vila Nova de Gaia
Famous for its historic wineries, where you can sample its authentic wines.
Vila Nova de Gaia is a town situated south of the River Douro, opposite Porto, known worldwide for its Port wine cellars. For centuries, these cellars have stored, aged and distributed the famous fortified wine that bears the region’s name. Their warehouses, built on the riverbanks, facilitate easy transport and provide an ideal environment for the wine’s maturation thanks to the constant humidity and temperature.
Visitors can tour several of these historic cellars, learn about the Port wine production processes and take part in guided tastings. Among the best known are Cálem, Sandeman, Ferreira and Graham’s, each with its own history and tradition. In addition to their oenological value, the cellars are a tourist attraction due to their architecture and their stunning views of Porto from the opposite bank of the river.
Vila Nova de Gaia thus combines culture, history and gastronomy, making it an essential destination for those visiting Porto who wish to learn more about Portugal’s wine heritage.
