STAGE 1: SARRIA - PORTOMARIN

We begin the route with a stage that presents no significant difficulties: it features frequent but moderate changes in elevation. It promises to be a rewarding walk, where we’ll enjoy the countryside and small villages, as well as crossing rivers over medieval bridges and discovering numerous ecclesiastical remains. We begin our journey at one of the most popular starting points for pilgrims wishing to complete the final 100 km to Santiago and earn the Compostela. After passing through the city’s historic centre and crossing the medieval bridge, the route continues through natural surroundings. We make our way through rural Galicia, amongst meadows and lush oak and chestnut forests, passing through many small hamlets, some of which offer facilities for pilgrims, such as Barbadelo, Rente and Ferreiros, where the milestone marking the 100-kilometre point to Santiago de Compostela is located. The route ends with the descent to Portomarín, a village known for its unique history of relocation, after its old town was submerged during the construction of the Belesar reservoir. We’ll enter the village via its old medieval bridge. Portomarín has numerous cafés, small shops and restaurants, as well as all the facilities pilgrims need.
