STAGE 2: PORTOMARÍN - PALAS DE REI

STAGE 2: PORTOMARÍN - PALAS DE REI

A stage winding its way through small villages, forest tracks and pilgrimage traditions, leading to Palas de Rei, in the province of Lugo.

During this stage, the changes in elevation are moderate, although the first half involves a climb from an altitude of 350 metres to 725 metres. Most of this stage follows tarmac tracks running parallel to the road (although it also passes through rural areas and small hamlets), but this is more than made up for by the numerous and incredible Romanesque churches we’ll come across, the stone cross-stones and the pre-Romanesque archaeological site at Castromaior. After the initial climb towards Gonzar and Castromaior, the route becomes more peaceful and flat, passing monuments of great historical importance such as the Lameiros stone cross, before reaching Palas de Rei. Palas de Rei is the end point of this stage: a modern, peaceful town that was of great importance during the Middle Ages and offers all the necessary facilities for pilgrims.
