Although the exact year of Melide's founding is unknown, the town is mentioned in 12th-century documents. After the original settlement was destroyed, King Alfonso IX decided to rebuild it along the Camino to serve as a welcoming point for pilgrims and to revitalize the new town. Its importance in Galicia extends beyond the Camino de Santiago, as it was the site where the decision was made to launch the Irmandiño Revolt—a pivotal event in Galician history. Today, the town preserves a rich heritage for pilgrims to enjoy, such as its cruceiro considered by many art historians to be the oldest in all of Galicia, dating back to the 14th century.
Lugo
