Santillana del Mar

Santillana del Mar

Santillana del Mar is one of Spain's towns of greatest historical and artistic value, featuring an old town that has been perfectly preserved since the Middle A

Strolling through the cobblestone streets of Santillana del Mar transports the traveler back in time. Many of its buildings are ancestral homes and Renaissance palaces. Much of its significance stems from the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, a masterpiece of Romanesque art that played a major role during the Middle Ages. Although not located within the town itself, Santillana del Mar is also known for being the closest town to the Altamira Caves—often called the "Sistine Chapel" of cave art.
