Sobrado dos Monxes

Sobrado dos Monxes

Sobrado dos Monxes is an unmissable stop on the Northern Way. Its Monastery of Santa María, a World Heritage Site, is a jewel of the Camino.

The heart and soul of Sobrado dos Monxes is none other than the monastery from which the town takes its name. Founded in the 10th century, it has been a landmark on the Camino ever since. Today, an active community of Cistercian monks keeps the tradition of welcoming pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago alive. Its rich heritage is complemented by a tranquil natural setting, crowned by the Laguna de Sobrado, a protected wetland of man-made origin built by the monks themselves in the 16th century.
