The section of the Portuguese Coastal Way between Arcade and Pontevedra is one of the shortest on the Way of St James, but it stands out for its wealth of heritage and the beauty of its natural landscapes. The day gets off to a monumental start as you cross the Ponte Sampaio, an imposing medieval stone viaduct over the River Verdugo which was the scene of the historic battle of the same name in 1809 against Napoleon’s troops. After leaving the town centre, pilgrims face the most demanding stretch of the day: the climb to A Canicouva via the Brea Vella, an evocative cobbled path that follows the original route of the ancient Roman Road XIX, flanked by traditional stone walls (corredoiras) and oak groves. After reaching the top of this rugged slope and passing close to the solitary chapel of Santa Marta, the route becomes noticeably gentler as it enters the municipality of Vilaboa. The final third of the route offers a pleasant, shaded walk running parallel to the river Tomeza, a traffic-free riverside path that smoothly guides walkers to the gates of Pontevedra. The entrance to the city leads straight into its historic centre, culminating in the iconic Plaza de la Peregrina, where the Baroque sanctuary, with its scallop-shell-shaped floor plan, officially welcomes the walkers.
