Situated in a predominantly rural and peaceful setting in the municipality of Barro, the Church of San Mamede da Portela is a jewel of Galicia’s religious heritage that welcomes pilgrims who choose the Spiritual Route of the Portuguese Way. Although the church’s current appearance is the result of a major neoclassical reconstruction carried out in the late 19th century, the parish has deep historical roots stretching back to the medieval period, preserving the essence of its original Romanesque foundation. The building stands out for the simplicity and sturdiness of its granite ashlar walls, with a main façade of clean lines crowned by a slender bell tower that serves as a visual landmark in the landscape. Inside, surrounded by an atmosphere of contemplation, it houses altarpieces of great devotional value dedicated to its patron saint, San Mamede. Flanked by its historic atrium and perfectly integrated into the wooded and agricultural landscape of the Pontevedra region, this church is a much-appreciated stop for walkers to have their pilgrim’s passport stamped, rest in the shade and enjoy the tranquillity before continuing on the route towards the Salnés region.
