It is one of the most representative religious buildings of Baiona’s historical and cultural heritage. This chapel is dedicated to Saint Liberata, a native of the town, virgin and martyr, as well as to her eight twin sisters and her wet nurse Sila, figures deeply linked to the local religious tradition. The chapel was built in 1709 and is a distinctive example of the ‘bastard Italian’ style, reminiscent of Tuscan architecture and featuring certain Plateresque decorative elements, which give it a unique artistic character within Galician architecture.
Its main façade, sober and monumental, is flanked by two towers adorned with ball-topped pinnacles, elements that emphasise the verticality and elegance of the whole structure. In the central section, the image of the crucified Saint Liberata stands out, a representation of great symbolic and devotional value to the people of Baiona. On either side of the façade, two coats of arms of great historical significance can be seen: that of Castile-León and that of the town of Baiona itself, reflecting the institutional and religious importance the sanctuary has held since its inception.
The building, constructed from granite typical of Galicia, blends seamlessly into the town’s historic setting and is closely linked to the area’s seafaring tradition. Inside, it retains an atmosphere of tranquillity and spirituality, complemented by artistic and religious elements that enrich its heritage value. In addition to its function as a place of worship, the sanctuary has become a cultural and tourist landmark, forming an essential part of Baiona’s historical identity and the artistic legacy of southern Galicia.
