The area now occupied by Castro Caldelas has always been inhabited, thanks to its magnificent geographical location; the numerous remains of ancient hillforts (*castros*) in the area bear witness to this. However, what immediately captures the attention of visitors arriving in the town is the imposing castle. It was built in the 14th century on the site of an earlier structure that already controlled this important transport hub. It was partially destroyed following the Irmandiño revolts of the 15th century. Since its reconstruction, it has served various purposes and today houses, among other facilities, the Tourist Office.
