Esgos
Like many of the small villages in the area, Esgos originated as a settlement dependent on the nearby Monastery of San Pedro de Rocas.
This small village serves as the perfect starting point for various hiking trails in the area. Naturally, San Pedro de Rocas—with its spectacular monastery carved directly into the rock—is the area's main attraction. Interestingly, the village features a monument honoring the itinerant knife sharpeners who were once so common in the region; indeed, one of the nicknames by which Ourense is still known is "Terra da chispa" (Land of Sparks), a reference to the sparks that would fly when sharpening knives or honing steels.
