Most likely founded in the 6th century as one of the area's many hermitages, its importance grew steadily, and by the 10th century, it was formally recognized as such. In the 12th century, it became a regional center of power, largely due to the renown it gained from bishops who had retired there in earlier centuries—leaving behind their rings, which came to be venerated as relics. Architecturally, Santo Estevo is a rarity, preserving three complete cloisters: one in the Romanesque style and two in the Gothic style.
